Household Repairs Leaks in pipe. Temporary repair. Apply a mending plate. To determine which size plate is needed, tie a knot in a piece of string and loop string once around the pipe until it touches the knot. Remove string from pipe and measure from the "touching" point to the knot.

Place the rubber gasket that comes with the mending plate over the hole in the pipe. Fold the plate around the pipe over the gasket and lock in place with bolts.

Permanent repair. Drain pipe. Clean hole and area around it with steel wool. Apply acid flux. Heat pipe with torch or soldering iron and apply solder.

Note. If copper tube springs many leaks, water should be treated to remove or reduce corrosive elements.

Leaks at soldered pints. Drain pipe. Clean joint with steel wool. Heat joint with torch until solder melts. Apply a little new solder.
