Household Repairs Rotting at bottom. If rot has not progressed too far, unpot the plant. Clean and wash tub thoroughly and let dry. Dig out soft wood and fill holes with plastic wood. Apply two liberal coats of zinc or copper naphthanate wood preservative to the wood inside and out. Line bottom and well up the sides with freezer-grade aluminum foil or heavy polyethylene film and poke drainage holes through it to correspond with holes in tub bottom. Pour in 2" or 3" of coarse gravel before repotting plants. Keep tub raised off floor about 1" to provide air circulation underneath.
