Household Repairs Note. Plastics included under this heading are those used in kitchenware, appliances, radio cabinets, toys, decorative accessories, etc. If you cannot identify the type of plastics used in something that needs to be mended, follow directions below. If these repair methods do not work, chances are that you are dealing with polyethylene, which see.

Broken, cracked. Wash edges and dry thoroughly. Apply plastic-mending adhesive to one edge and press broken pieces together overnight. If the broken section is thin, it is then advisable to reinforce the joint by gluing a thin plastic patch over it. Use the same adhesive.

Scratched. Better leave well enough alone. However, if you want to take a chance, dip a rag in sewing-machine or salad oil and then in powdered pumice. Rub on the scratch until it is obliterated. Then wipe surface clean and repeat the process with rottenstone. When the area dulled by the pumice begins to shine, wipe clean again. And then rub with powdered rouge (available at the hardware store) and water. This should restore the original shine pretty well.
