Household Repairs Plastic on top rails cracked. Don't try to fix it. Peel it off and either leave wood unfinished or apply non-toxic paint.

Slat broken. If broken with the grain, coat the edges with Weld-wood plastic resin glue and clamp together with C-clamps for 24 hours. If break is across the grain, saw off slat flush with bottom rail and pull it out of mortise in top rail. Cut new slat the same length and shape top to fit in mortise. Apply epoxy glue in mortise and set in slat. To hold slat on bottom rail, daub epoxy glue on end and press in place on rail. When glue is dry, drive a long thin screw up through the rail into end of slat or join the slat to the rail with a steel corner brace.

Bottom weak. Check hinges, angle irons or wood strips on which bottom rests. Reglue wood strips which reinforce the bottom.
