Household Repairs Holes, tears in polyethylene film. Experiment first on some scrap material to get the hang of making this repair. Overlap the edges of the film or cut a patch out of polyethylene and lay it over the hole. Place a sheet of white paper on top. Heat a flatiron to about the middle temperature setting and hold it on the paper for several seconds. The polyethylene edges should heat-seal together. If they don't, increase iron temperature slightly. But beware using too high temperature, because it will disintegrate the plastic.

Breaks in thick polyethylene. A perfect repair is impossible. But broken parts can sometimes be joined by touching the edges quickly to an electric range burner set at middle temperature and then immediately pressing them together.
