Household Repairs Floor cracked, uneven. See brick, concrete, or stone as the case may be.

Columns rotting. See column.

Wood railings rotting. See fence.

Iron railings wobbly. Chip out weak mortar around base of posts (or bolts holding posts). Blow out crumbs with vacuum cleaner. If opening is fairly small, force in plastic steel. If opening is large, dampen edges of masonry. Cram in mortar made of 1 part cement and 3 parts sand. In either case, brace the railing in vertical position until filler material hardens.

Collects water in low spot. Floor can be leveled by troweling on latex cement or by chipping out concrete in low spot to a depth of 1" and filling with mortar of 1 part Portland cement and 3 parts sand. See Basic Methods: How to Mix and Handle Concrete. However, patch will not match surrounding surface unless you paint it; and paint does not hold up very well on concrete paving.
