Leaks. Finding a leak is often the hardest part of fixing one. The best method, if you can get up under the roof, is to look for pinpricks of light and then to stick long wires up through the holes. If you can't see any holes, try to trace the course of the water back to its source. If both of these methods are unsuccessful or if you cannot get under the roof, the only thing you can do is examine the top of the roof inch by inch. For repair of leaks, see following entries.
Ridge sags. Rent one or two steel jack posts, set them under the ridge pole and jack them up evenly. When ridge is straight, join the rafters on opposite sides of the ridge pole with a series of collar beams cut out of 2" by 6" lumber. The beams should be approximately 4' below the ridge pole and securely spiked to the rafters.
