Household Repairs Top and base corroded together. Soak the salt cellar in warm water until top can be removed. If this fails, soak it in rust-breaking penetrating oil for several days. When pieces come apart, remove as much of the corrosion as possible with a rag, then use very fine emery cloth. To prevent recurrence of trouble, store salt cellars only in a dry place. Remove, clean, and thoroughly dry top frequently.
