Household Repairs Creaks, squeaks. There is little you can do to stop creaking permanently. Remove rust on chains or springs with emery cloth, steel wool, and liquid rust-remover. Apply a light coating of car grease if clothing will not touch it. Otherwise keep lightly coated with oil.

Holes, tears in cushions. See cushion, bench.

Enameled steel rusted. Clean thoroughly with steel wool. Apply rust-inhibiting paint. Then apply trim and shutter paint.
