Household Repairs Cracks in mortar joints between stones. Chip out broken and weak mortar with a cold chisel. Blow out crumbs with vacuum cleaner. Pack in mortar made of 1 part cement and 3 parts sand.

Stone loose. Lift it out. Chip away mortar joints around edges and chip away top of mortar bed to a depth of 1" below old level. Clean out crumbs and dirt. Saturate mortar bed overnight with water, then let dry until no standing water remains. Brush on a soupy grout of cement. Then immediately spread on mortar bed a new layer of mortar made of 1 part cement and 3 parts sand. Set in stone and level it with surrounding surface. Fill in around edges with more mortar. Keep covered for about 48 hours with damp burlap.
