Doesn't work. Call a serviceman. But if you have a gas water heater and the pilot light is out, you can proceed as follows: First shut off the A valve, which is the main gas valve to the burner, and the B pilot valve. Wait five minutes. Then turn on B valve and ignite with a match. Then turn on the A valve.
Note. Instructions for lighting pilot lights are printed on a tag attached to heater. Don't lose these.
Water too hot or too cold. Call a serviceman if you have a storage-type heater. If it's an indirect takeoff heater, change the opening on the mixing valve.
Not delivering enough hot water. Chances are heater is clogged with scale. Call a serviceman. It may also be advisable to install a water softener.
Sediment in hot water. Open valve in side of heater and drain until water runs clear.
Rust in hot water. Either the tank is corroding or something is wrong with your main water supply. Call a serviceman.
Gas heater smells. Shut off main gas control valve at once and call a serviceman. Don't look for leaks with a lighted match.
