Window sticks. Check whether it is painted shut. Run point of a sharp knife carefully around edge of sash. If necessary, drive a thin putty knife between sash and stop beads.
If sticking results from swelling of wood, rub paraffin or beeswax on the stiles. Or spray stiles with a dry lubricant.
If this still doesn't work, pry up stop beads and move them away from the window.
Sash cord broken or stretched. Pry off inside stop bead on one side of sash and remove lower sash. Unscrew top of pocket cover in the stile and take out sash weight. Cut off cord. Push new cord over pulley at top of window frame and run it down through slot in frame. Tie it securely to sash weight, replace weight in frame and pull it up to the pulley. Set sash on window sill and pull cord down 3" below hole in edge of sash. Knot cord at this point and wedge knot in hole. Replace window in frame and work it up and down. Adjust length of cord. Then replace pocket cover and stop bead.
If sash cord on upper sash is broken, repair is made in same way. To remove sash it is necessary first to remove bottom sash as above and then to pry up the parting strip between the two sashes.
