Household Repairs Finish marred. See lacquered surface, painted surface, shellacked surface, or varnished surface as case may be.

Burns, dents. See furniture, wood.

Holes in painted wood. If there is backing behind the wood (as in house siding, for example), brush linseed oil into hole and fill with putty. Paint when surface is hard. If there is not backing behind the wood (as in a box), tack a scrap of thin aluminum behind the hole and fill with putty as above. Or for a neater repair, cut the hole to a geometrical shape with a coping saw. Be sure sides of hole are straight. Then cut a plug of wood to fit, and glue it into the hole with Weldwood plastic resin glue or Elmer's waterproof glue.

Holes in stained wood. Treat as above, but use plastic wood instead of putty. Mix the wood with stain before applying it; it will not take stain when it dries.
