You can buy a "clutch coupling" or "solenoid valve" that will help to counteract this. Your serviceman will have the prices and can install either one for you.

85. The Ceiling Is First Priority
Buy insulation that comes without the barrier. When you lay the insulation, be sure that all areas are covered except, of course, for the eave vents and other ventilators.

87. What Is Eer?
Since it is more efficient and better made, the unit will likely cost a little more but will probably be a better buy in the long run when you remember the energy savings it delivers.

89. Painting Tools To Use And How To Use Them
Whether you use a brush, roller, or spray gun (or spray can) depends on the contours of the surface, the area and accessibility, and the finish desired. A brush is the best all-round painting tool. It can be used to apply any type of paint on any type of surface and to achieve any type of finish. A roller is much faster, but its use is pretty well limited to large surfaces and it leaves a slightly stippled finish; furthermore it is very difficult to clean if used with anything other than water-based paint. A spray gun, when properly used, is extremely fast and leaves an almost perfectly smooth paint surface, but the fine mist it produces is a nuisance. A spray can has similar advantages and disadvantages. I recommend that you use sprayers only for painting intricate surfaces (wicker chairs and shutters, for example), for applying lacquer, and for refinishing kitchen cabinets where an extremely flat finish is desired. Buy the most expensive brush you can afford. It flows the paint on better, doesn't lose its bristles, lasts longer. If you're starting with a new brush, shake out the loose bristles, then suspend the brush in linseed oil for 12 hours so the paint will not cling so tightly in the bristles. Squeeze out the oil with a stick, and spin the handle between your palms to remove the last drops. Dip the brush only halfway into the paint and slap off the excess on the inside of the can (don't scrape it across the rim). Apply paint with light, short strokes using only the ends of the bristles. Brush back and forth; then smooth the paint with cross strokes; then, to eliminate brush marks almost entirely, smooth out again in the direction you started. Paint should be brushed on. Enamel, varnish, and lacquer are applied with a somewhat fuller brush and flowed on. Use short-nap rollers for most jobs; long-nap rollers when painting rough surfaces (stucco or concrete, for instance). Do not overload the roller when filling with paint. Start rolling on paint a slight distance from the previously painted area and work towards that. Roll lightly back and forth—in any direction—but finish by rolling all strokes in one direction. Instead of buying a spray gun, rent one. Tell the dealer what you are going to paint and have him give you the correct nozzle. Mix the paint thoroughly and strain through cheesecloth or wire screening. Thin it according to dealer's directions. Before starting to spray, cover everything that is not to be painted with canvas, newspaper, masking tape. Wear a mask-preferably a respirator—when painting. Spraying is done with a full arm motion. Hold the gun nozzle 6" from the surface and keep it pointed toward it at right angles. Start your stroke before pulling the trigger and release trigger before reaching the end of the stroke. Always keep the gun moving to avoid building up paint in one spot. Generally it is advisable to spray from side to side, then top to bottom. Overlap spray patterns about one-quarter to one-half.
