Shards of prehistoric pottery bearing imprints of baskets, lead us to assume that clay was smeared inside of reed baskets so that grain and other dry materials could be stored and transported; since these shards have been fired, the next natural assumption is that the baskets were accidentally burned away leaving a fired, clay pot.
