351. Repairing
To replace broken-off parts you will need clean water, a prepared patching compound and the bamboo brush. If you do not have commercially prepared patching compound, a satisfactory substitute can be made by mixing the fine clay which has been sanded from the piece with enough water to make a paste, then adding a few drops of vinegar to bring it to the consistency of heavy cream.

352. Pyrometric Cones
Large cones are also placed here and there throughout the kiln, to determine which areas have "hot spots" or "cold spots," as each kiln will have areas, peculiar to that particular kiln, which receive more or less heat, and knowledge of these areas can influence placement of pieces in the kiln.

353. Loading The Kiln
To place a heavy piece on top of a light one will almost always cause the one on the bottom to warp or crack.

354. Firing Procedures
A firing time of at least 8 hours is recommended for kilns of moderate size (large kilns will require even more time), to reach temperatures in the cone 06-04 range.

355. Care Of The Kiln
Good housekeeping will pay off in unblemished glazed ware and longer kiln life, so the kiln should be kept as clean as possible.

356. Tools
Hand movement with the tool will determine the pattern formed, and can be long, sinuous curves or very angular lines, for almost innumerable effects.

357. Sgraffito Methods
Pencil lines will show on even very dark colors. Clay carbon paper or graphite paper can be used when tracing designs onto light color grounds, but will not produce readily discernible marks on dark colors; to trace a design onto a piece covered with black or other dark tones of underglaze color, white dress-makers' carbon paper can be used, or the back of the tracing pattern can be rubbed with chalk or talcum powder.

358. Types Of Brushes
In this chapter, the types of brushes most often used by the hobby ceramist will be "discussed," and the brushstrokes they are capable of producing will be illustrated.

359. Brush Manufacture
For decorative work, only the best quality of brushes should be purchased; long life and ease in handling will more than offset any additional cost.

360. Glaze Brushes
Synthetic bristles - usually nylon - are used in brushes for specialty glazes, such as wood-tone glazes, since these Stiffer bristles will break up the particles of pigment more readily than will softer bristles.
